Melanie

In one of BH’s recent posts, he wrote about his best buddies, "The 4 Musketeers" and it made me think of my friend Melanie.

She’s the one friend from High School that I’ve kept in touch with, and was always an example of what a real friend was. She kept secrets, and she would never talk about anyone behind their back. She’s the first friend that I knew without a doubt I could always trust.
I knew her in grade school, but really didn’t like her.
When we moved back to the area, I was going into my sophmore year in high school, and I found out that I did like her. LOL

We had lots of good times together, got into trouble together (her Mom thought I was a wild child and a bad influence). Little did she know Mel was just as much an instigator as I was.
OH, and she seemed to attract some ‘bad’ boys. One was Rick, who moved to our area from LasVegas, and was a big KISS fan… long hair, pretty wild. I’m sure her Mom thought I had something to do with it, but I didn’t. I had brothers that were known as the bad boys, I never wanted to date any. lol

We loved to go to dances, and we went to as many as we could. Our motto was, if a boy asked us to dance, we wouldn’t say no… no matter who he was. lol
I’m afraid Mel usually got the bad end of that deal, but we both had some reasons to resent ‘Stairway to Heaven’, ‘Nights in White Satin’ or any long version of a song.
We did have fun. All those summer nights, getting ready before the dance, and hanging out after.
We both had a psychic connection of when it was time for  Dairy Queen, or if one of us needed to run interference
with a boy.
I could never ask for a better friend. She’s highly intelligent, a brainiac even, and yet she has the best sense of humor. We get on the phone and she has me laughing the whole time. She was a little lacking in common sense and ‘street smarts’ at times (she’s the first to admit that), so, I was her common sense and street smarts. LOL
I spent a lot of time at her house, especially when things were bad at home.
She’s a CPA, a Mom, a Musician (she has a baby grand and she plays beautifully) and has always been a friend I could count on, and trust. She’s the kind of friend and person I strive to be. I love her bunches.

I have some pictures of us around here. I’ve been trying to find them. One Halloween we decided to dress up as vampires… the end result, so her brother said, was that we looked more like hookers, so, we went with it, we were vampire hookers! (it’s one of my favorite pictures) BIG HUGS, Steph

Well I know how you feel, I still talk to some of my friends from high school. One friend well I use that term loosly because she is the complete opposite of me. In fact we aren\’t even friends anymore. I want nothing to do with her. But the girl who does my hair i have known since 2nd grade. So 20 years or so. She is the coolest.

    A single stick breaks easy

Many sticks don\’t break so easy

or in other words, those who have good friends will never have to stand alone unless they wish to
    storm.

Sounds like a good friend and good memories.  The winch seems to have things figured out, a top for all outings!  The summer has gone good and its hot here too, but it is going by fast.  There just never seems to be the time to do the things you want to do.

I don\’t think I had a best friend.  I was too afraid to expose myself in high school.  Not just the obvious, but the whole slowly collapsing situation at home.  I acquired a best friend in college – although he grew to the status of best friend over a period of time after college – it was he whom I stayed with the summer I hitched to California to become a surfer (I have referred to him as Moondog in blogging, which he would kill me for).  We are still in touch, but far apart.
Isn\’t this parental thing about \’bad influence\’ a crock?  No parent ever wants to admit the depths which his/her own little darling can reach.  I had one kid in high school who was forbidden to be with me.  Several parents considered me to be a bad influence, but the fact was it was usually their kid who thought of all the bad stuff – I was just the one who said, "OK, lets!".

Sounds like a great friend!  I\’d like to see that picture too.
I truly admire people who can keep friendships alive from childhood into adult life.  It\’s very rewarding.
